When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?
I started CrossFit in January of 2017. I had just moved to the Dallas area in December and was looking for a good workout program to get into and stumbled upon a “new year, new you” challenge that CrossFit Urban Jungle was doing and decided to just dive in and try it

What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?
I’m not sure if I would say I have a favorite WOD, but one that I enjoy seeing how well I can do on is CINDY. Basic movements and seeing if I can beat my previous number of rounds is always a good challenge I enjoy. I don’t really have a specific least favorite WOD, but I don’t ever look forward to WODs that call for overhead squats simply because I’m very weak in that area.

What is your favorite/least favorite movement?
My favorite movement would probably be a squat clean or deadlift. I was not familiar with either one of these prior to joining and have grown to enjoy getting stronger with those movements. My least favorite movement, as I said earlier, I really don’t enjoy overhead squats.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)
I moved to the DFW area about a year and a half ago from the West Texas area. I’m a 3rd-grade teacher in Richardson ISD. I love my job and workplace. I’m also working on completing my Masters in Educational Leadership so that I can eventually become a school administrator. When I’m not at work or doing grad school work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to the movies, the lake, trying new restaurants and exploring new places around the area.

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?
Before I joined CFUJ I didn’t have a workout routine. I never did athletics in college and so working out didn’t come naturally in my routine, that’s why I joined that “new year, new you” program because I knew I needed to start somewhere.

What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?
After my first CrossFit WOD, I remember leaving and thinking, “that was so hard and everything hurts, but I can’t wait to come back and do it again.” I enjoyed how much it challenged me physically, but I absolutely loved the atmosphere of it all.

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?  Have you achieved any of those goals?
When I joined CFUJ, my only goal was to get a foundation of a healthy lifestyle and take better care of my body. I have achieved SO much more than just that. Within my first year of doing CrossFit, I saw so many changed not just in my weight, but I discovered that I’m stronger than I thought and have a healthier outlook on things overall now.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
CrossFit has definitely affected my life outside the gym. Besides going to work and hardly being able to bend down to tie kids’ shoes from being so sore from the WOD the day before, I changed the way I would eat and snack throughout the day. I became more active in school things and I just feel more confident overall.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?
I participated in my first CrossFit Open this past year and I would never have thought I would have even tried. I had to scale the WODs, but I gave it all I had and it pushed me to try new things and I achieved 5 strict band pull-ups for the first time during the open.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CFUJ?
I would say don’t overthink it or listen to all the haters about CrossFit. I had no idea what I was stepping into and I’m now the healthiest I’ve ever been. There are always ways to scale things and you’re never counted out. There really is a way for everyone to get involved and do the WODs.

Something you might not know about me is?
I worked at a Martial Arts place back home and was trained in Krav Maga for a year.
